THANK YOU I want to thank all those who contributed their expertise and their time over the Fireworks weekend at the Leighton Buzzard Lions Club Firework Spectacular. It is difficult to know where to begin, but here goes! The lovely Gill who is Site Manager at Brooklands School who performed above and beyond everything we expected. Vernon’s Van Hire who provided a Luton van with a tail lift free of charge. Redland Tiles and the wonderful Dave Tucker who delivered the pallets for the bonfire, almost single handedly built the bonfire with the fork lift truck and also lent us the huge trailer which became the stage for The Leighton Musical Theatre Company who performed My Fair Lady. Special thanks go to Simon Howes of The Cottisloe School in Wing who set up the lighting and audio for the stage. For the first time we had the assistance of The Army Cadets under Detachment Commander Richard Forsythe, who were awesome! The heavy work just melted away! In the evening the ATC were on site to Marshall the Car Parking and patrol the safety fence, but they also came back on Sunday morning to help with the clearing up – magic! Thanks also to The Friday Club, they describe themselves as a Youth Club for OAP’s their work was invaluable. We must thank St John who attended and once again were not called upon to patch up anyone! The Police were in attendance with 6 officers, very smart they were too. We had great help from ex-Lions Rob Venn and Alan Garner and also from many Lions from Milton Keynes and Bletchley Clubs. Our own band of Friends of Lions were in attendance manning the pay gates and making tea and coffee. More special thanks goes to Watsons Lettings and also to The LBO for selling tickets before the event, we had a record year perhaps largely due to the tremendous help of Peter Hailes our Town Crier who worked all day Saturday directing folk to the sales offices and then was on site in the evening to add to the spectacle. Thanks to Cllr David Bowater our Deputy Mayor who lit the bonfire Food was supplied by The Frying Dutchman, Dinky Donuts and Café 4 U and we thank them for their donations to our funds. The sale of ‘lightsticks’ and various glowing headgear was undertaken by Val Poole and her friends again this year. Thanks to Jewsons for the help with hiring equipment and of course to all the Leighton Buzzard Lions and their long suffering families and friends for helping make last Saturday so magical. By the way the £6500 we made will be instrumental in helping many of those who are less fortunate than ourselves. Lion Julian Swaby

The 30th June 2010 saw the introduction of our new
President, Lion John Gout. Whilst it is a new Lionistic year John has
been President many times before, since he was the Charter president
40 years ago. The Official Handover ceremony was held on June 23rd at the Leighton Buzzard Golf Club when John was handed the chain of office by Lion Les Westley.
During the past year the club has distributed over £9000 to worthy causes. |

We would like to thank all the helpers and the public who attended the Lions Club Fireworks Spectacular at Brooklands School on Saturday 7th November. Luckily we were blessed by fantastic weather which helped us record an attendance figure approaching 6000. We haven't finished all the counting yet, but are confident of achieving a profit of around £7000 for our charitable account. The event was started many years ago to provide an alternative to the practice of letting off fireworks in back gardens, hopefully reducing injury caused by the practice.
The event has become ever
more popular, now allowing us to earn charitable funds for
distribution by the club.
A great big thank you to Leighton Buzzard and 'See you next year!' |

These are photos of Lion President Les with Audrey Gurney handing
over a cheque for £1000 to the Leonard Cheshire Homes. The money
came from donations in memory of Lion Stan Gurney, who passed away
earlier this year, and was for many years closely associated with
the charity. |

JUNE 2009

On Wednesday June 24th 2009, Leighton Buzzard Lions Club welcomed in their new President Les Westley (right), who took over from outgoing president Peter Richardson. This is the third time that Les has accepted the Presidential honour and said that he was happy to take over guidance of the club again, especially as it is in such great shape. Handing over the Presidential Chain of Office, Peter related that during his year at the helm more that £5000 had been spent on various charitable causes, money coming from the Fireworks Spectacular, held each November at Brooklands School and from fares taken on Lionel the land train, which appears at many local fetes and carnivals. Peter went on to thank all the Friends of Leighton Buzzard Lions Club who help at our events, together with many local firms who sponsor and support the club throughout the year. |
